Sustainable and innovative research

Tradition

In order to preserve the qualities of the historical building and protect its original fabric, particular attention is being paid to handling the listed building with care and to developing a heritage conservation concept for renovating the Alte Schäfflerei and making it more energy-efficient. The renovation, restoration and conversion measures are intended to serve as a model for old buildings.

Innovation

The concept of the Center is built on four pillars: Research, Demonstration, Knowledge Acquisition & Knowledge Transfer.

The Fraunhofer Center researches into innovative, energy-saving and sustainable solutions for renovating old buildings and preserving historical monuments based on interdisciplinary knowledge combined with expertise from research, heritage conservation, trade and industry. The Alte Schäfflerei is used to demonstrate examples of renovation solutions. In addition, research results are made accessible to a broad public through active knowledge transfer.

The interdisciplinary approach and the combination of building physics and heritage conservation are core features of the Center. Taking the principle of reversibility into account, research is conducted on innovative materials and techniques for conserving historical monuments and renovating old buildings in terms of energy efficiency, the effectiveness of existing systems is called into question and new solutions are developed.
